- Keep to the left of the road
- Use bicycle paths
- Walk your bicycle on sidewalks. You can ride your bicycle if there is a "Bicycle Traffic Allowed" sign (figure 1)
- It is prohibited to ride double on a bicycle
- Use a light at night
- Do not leave your bicycle on the roads or sidewalks for a long time
- Check the destination of the bus before boarding.
- Board the bus from the rear door and take a ticket
from the machine near the door. The number on the
ticket indicates the fare zone. If you board the bus from
the starting zone, there is no ticket.
- Announcements are made inside the bus of the
approaching bus stop. When you hear the name of the
bus stop where you wish to get off, press one of the
buttons attached inside the bus.
- The fares are shown on the board above the exit (near
the front door). Check the fare against the number on your
ticket. If you have no ticket, pay the amount shown under
"無券"(muken in Japanese) or " - " (no number) on the board.
- Put your ticket and fare (or coupon ticket) into the box beside
the driver when you get off. Please note that you can NOT receive
the change if you put in more than your fare. If you have a commuter
pass, show it to the driver.
- You can pick up a taxi in front of JR Tottori Station or at taxi
company offices around the city. You can also telephone a taxi
company and ask them to pick you up. Although there are no
cruising taxis in Tottori, empty taxis will pick you up if you raise your hand at them.
- When the taxi stops, the left rear door will open automatically.
- Tell the driver where you wish to go. If you cannot speak Japanese, write the address or draw a map on a piece of paper and show it to the driver.
- When traveling for a short distance, please buy a ticket at the ticket vending machines.
When traveling for a long distance or by a limited express (tokkyu), or by
reserved seat, please buy the ticket at the station counters (midori no madoguchi)
or the special ticket vending machines (midori no kenbaiki)
- Please show your ticket and have it stamped at the gate. Please go to the right platform and board the train.
- Please show your ticket to the conductor when he/she comes to check passengers' tickets.
- After getting off the train, please give your ticket to the staff at the gate.
There are some stations that have no staff at the gate and if you get off
at such stations, please put your ticket into the ticket box placed on the stations.
If your train has no conductor (also called one-man train or conductorless train),
please put your ticket into the fare box near the driver's seat before getting off.
- More than 2 such children are accompanied by a person subject to "adult" or "children" fare (i.e. the first two children can travel for free)
- 1 – 5 years old children travel alone, or 1 – 5 year old or under 1 year old children take reserved seats or overnight train beds.

Bicycles are convenient for covering short distances and are used by many people. Please observe the following rules when riding a bicycle.
No-Parking Zones for Bicycles
Bicycles which are left on the sidewalks
not only spoil the appearance of the city, but also
obstruct pedestrians and are dangerous to physically
handicapped or blind people.
Tottori City has designated the area around the JR
Tottori Station as a "No Bicycle Parking Zone" for
bicycles (figure 2) marked with
No Bicycle Parking signs (figure 3).
Bicycles left in this zone will be removed automatically,
and bicycles outside this zone will also be removed if left
for a long time. On reclaiming the bicycle, the owner will be
charged for removing and storing the bicycle.
(1) Within No Bicycle Parking Zone
Bicycles will be removed two hours after a warning notice is attached.
(2) Outside of No Bicycle Parking Zone
Bicycles will be removed seven days after a warning notice is attached.
Tottori Station Bicycle Parking Lot
To leave your bicycle near the JR Tottori Station,
please use the bicycle parking lot (parking charges incur) (green area in figure 2).

Two companies, Hinomaru Bus Limited and Nihon Kotsu, operate buses on regular routes in the city.
How to Use
※Please prepare enough small change when you travel by bus.
If you do not have enough change, use the change machine
next to the driver. You can change 100 yen coins, 500 yen
coins, and 1,000 yen bills. Coupon tickets and commuter passes
are sold at Tottori Station Bus Terminal in front of JR Tottori Station.

If accompanied by a fare paying passenger, 1 child can travel free. Additional children must pay children’s fare. Children travelling alone must pay children’s fare.
Taxi
There are 3 types of taxi: small taxis for up to 4 passengers, medium-sized taxis for up to 5 passengers, and jumbo taxis for up to 8 passengers. Reservations are necessary for jumbo taxis.

Fares
The fare depends on the size of the taxi, the distance covered, and the time taken. The fare is displayed on the meter. No tip is necessary. A 20% surcharge is added from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Railway

JR (Japan Railways) operates the largest train network in Japan, covering almost all areas in the country. In addition, the Wakasa Tetsudo operates between Koge and Wakasa, and the Chizu Kyuko has begun operation since December 1994.
How to travel by railway
Tickets
When you travel by local (futsu) or rapid service (kaisoku) trains, you only need to buy a regular ticket. When you travel by express (kyuko), limited express (tokkyu), reserved seat, first-class car (so called "green car"), overnight train, or Shinkansen, you need to buy additional tickets besides the regular tickets.

►Adult Fare
Persons aged 12 years and older pay the full fare. However, 12 year old elementary school students can travel at the Children fare.
►Children Fare
Children from age 6 to 11 pay half the Adults fare (less than 10 yen is rounded down to the nearest 10 yen). The fares for the green car (first-class car) and overnight trains are the same as the Adults fare. 6 year old children who have not yet enrolled in elementary school can travel at the Infants/Toddler Fare.
►Infants/Toddler Fare (1-5 years)
Under 1 year old
Infants from age 1 to 5 as well as under 1 year old children can travel for free.
